Phuket Travel and Destination Guide

Main Attractions in Phuket

Phuket is a relatively large island, and provides a whole host of attractions for the visitor. From the relaxing, out of-the-way beaches and villages to the hustle and bustle of the tourist strips and Phuket town, there are things to see and do around every corner. As the attractions are fairly spread out, it can be useful to use the hotel tour desk to arrange transfers, or alternatively hire a jeep to give yourself more flexibility.

Phuket FantaSea show is an OTT extravaganza, which is nonetheless very professionally presented. Including traditional dancing, trapeze artists, Thai warriors on elephants and everyday scenes recreated with a great sound-and light show, it provides a glimpse into some Thai myths and legends as well as a bawdy pantomime style entertainment. The show is held in vast auditorium, and there are souvenir shops and arcades to wander around as well as a set buffet dinner that can be included in the entrance price. FantaSea is located on Kamala Beach. They will also arrange hotel-transfers. For more info

Simon Cabaret – In the land of the “katoey”, Simon Cabaret is one of the biggest, glitziest, most glam cabaret shows around. The entertainment features a spectacular musical, performed by this very professional, entertaining troupe of “girls” all wearing out-of-this-world feathered and sequined numbers, and performing choreographed routines. Fabulous fun.

Phuket Town may not look much from the ring-road, but take an afternoon to saunter round the Old-Town and you will be pleasantly surprised. Sino-Portuguese architecture, interesting boutiques, some excellent local restaurants and interesting sights combine to give the impression of a quaint old-world town.

Wat Chalong is one of Phuket's most important temples and visited by many hundreds of tourists and locals each year. The building itself is impressive, and the intricate decoration of the inlaid mirrors on its many pagodas is striking. Like many Thai temples, the Wat is at the heart of cultural life for the locals for miles around, and this is particularly evident on one of the many annual religious festivals, when devotees will come to make merit at the temple, or the sporadic temple-fairs when the locals get together for a fun-filled evening of entertainment.

Khao Praew Thaew National Park, located around 20 kilometers north of Phuket Town, is a jungle region, great for trekking. Guides can be arranged for short or long treks, and canoe trips and elephant tours operate within the park. There is also a Gibbon rehabilitation project, and two waterfalls, Ton Sai and Bang Pae that are popular bathing and picnicking spots.
